When the salt and sand of the ocean side start to feel a bit too abrasive, locals head to Long Pond in Harwich. As the largest freshwater pond on Cape Cod, it offers a completely different vibe—crystal clear "sweet water," no waves, and a serene woodland backdrop. Long Pond lies half in Brewster and half in Harwich. It is a large pond great for swimming, boating, jet skiing, and fishing. There is another public access off Cahoon Road in Brewster.
🌲 The Vibe: The "Great Lake" of the Cape
Long Pond isn’t your average neighborhood swimming hole; it’s a massive, glacial kettle pond that straddles the line between Harwich and Brewster. Because it’s so large, it feels more like a lake in New Hampshire than a pond on the coast.
- The Water: It is remarkably clear and refreshing. For those who aren't fans of the "sticky" feeling of salt water or the bite of the Atlantic, this is the ultimate sanctuary.
- The Landscape: Thick pine forests and sandy slopes. The water stays shallow for quite a way out, making it a dream for parents with toddlers.
🚲 The Bike Path Detour
One of the best ways to experience Long Pond is actually from the Cape Cod Rail Trail. The bike path crosses directly over the pond on a scenic bridge. It’s a very popular spot for cyclists to pull over, lean their bikes against the railing, and take a "scenic breather" while watching the boats below.
🛶 What to Do at Long Pond
- Boating & Paddling: Because of its size, Long Pond is one of the few places on the Cape where you’ll see everything from kayaks to motorboats and jet skis. There is a public boat ramp located right off Long Pond Road.
- Fishing: It’s a premier fishing spot, stocked regularly with trout, and famous for its smallmouth bass.
- Swimming: The designated beach area is roped off for safety, providing a calm environment away from the boat traffic.
🚗 The "Need to Know" Logistics (Parking & Access)
Parking at Long Pond is straightforward but does require a bit of planning during the peak summer months.
- The Lot: There is a dedicated parking lot located at the Long Pond Beach/Fernandez Bog area off Long Pond Road. It is paved and well-maintained, but it serves both the beach and the boat ramp, so it can fill up quickly on weekends.
- Stickers and Fees: * During the summer season (typically mid-June through Labor Day), a Harwich Town Beach Sticker is required to park.
- Unlike some of the saltwater beaches, Long Pond does not typically offer "daily" parking passes at the gate. You’ll need to have your resident or renter sticker displayed to avoid a ticket.
- Amenities: There are restrooms and changing rooms on-site, as well as a lifeguard stand during the day in the summer.
